The PJT’s are on their way

Here we go ya’ll. My boys and girl are on the West coast and ready to Funk Up San Francisco.
This Friday Feb. 5th at The Independent The Pimps of Joytime, J. Boogies Dubtronic Science and myself DJ Concerned are gonna
bring it to all the party people.

Below is a little bio on each band in case your not familiar with their groovy sounds.

The Pimps of Joytime are a multi-ethnic group that hits all the marks and crosses all the barriers, bridging the gap between underground funk, soul, pop, dance, afrobeat and latin, filling every song with soulful harmonies and uplifting vibes. Mixing samples and dance beats with tasty live musicianship and sweet vocal harmonies, The Pimps of Joytime have evolved into the current five-piece that gets crowds on their feet from London to San Francisco. Somehow, The PJT’s found a way to put a modern twist on a retro sound, creating dirty, ass-shakin’ grooves like no one else out there.

Representing San Francisco all over the world, J-Boogie has been Djing for over 15 years in clubs, festivals, stadiums, house parties and radio shows including KUSF’s Beatsauce. With several albums, releases and mix cds on labels like Om Records and Ubiquity, J-Boogie is one of the few DJ’s incorporating live musicians and MC’s into his DJ Sets. His band J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science takes you on a trip around the world.

San Francisco

Well, I made it to the bay and it’s been everything I’ve hoped for. It amazes me how your perspective can change after a plane ride. I realize now being here, you can’t have all the things you want in life at once. Sometimes you have to give up  things that you don’t want to give up in order to get something else. It’s always a trade and not always fair but different. If I have any advice from my move it is this. If you dream of something and you have a chance to pursue that dream, at least try it. That’s the only way you’ll ever know if it’s right. The first 4 days here have been amazing and inspirational to me. Non Stop Bhangra was off the hook, the crowd was so into the music and vibes. Can’t wait for the next one. Remember….it’s the third Saturday of each month. For those of you that know me know how obsessed I am with mexican food, it’s been a daily dose of tacos and burritos for me since I got here. That’s all for now…Check the shows page for some good upcoming shows you won’t want to miss if your in the bay area…

You came back….well nice to see you here. We are almost a week into the new year and there a some big changes in the world of DJ Concerned. I’m moving to San Francisco to further follow my dream of being the best DJ I can be. I’ve been given the opportunity by the Non Stop Bhangra collective to be a part of their special team. NSB has brought me out to the city by the bay many times to rock their amazing monthly party that takes place on the third Saturday of each month at The Rickshaw Stop. I obviously jumped at the chance to work and play with some of the best artists and people in the bay area. I will be flying out of my hometown of NYC to my new home, San Francisco, on Jan. 13th 2010. I’m excited for the opportunity to play for a lot of club happy people on a regular basis. Big up to the NSB crew. Love you all and I’ll see you soon. 2009 brought a lot great things my way and I feel like I’ve learned more this year than any other year of my life. I won’t get into to many particulars but one thing I’d like to touch on is the loss of my good friend and DJ partner (Soul Searching) DJ Reverend Soul aka Solange Raulston. Solange was a big bright spirit who meant a lot to many people around the world. She was killed while riding her bike in our neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Solange was a soul slinger and you always knew when she was in the room. I miss you Solange and I love you Solange. R.I.P. DJ Reverend Soul. At some point I will be bringing back the Soul Searching party and I will honor my fallen sister with sweet soul music to lift spirits wherever this journey takes me. Everyday we get a chance to live is a good day. Try and stay positive y’all. Life ain’t easy but it’s worth living while you got the chance. One love…I’m out

As many of you know the Pimps of Joytime are one of my favorite bands. Lead by the musical mind of Mr. Brian J, supported by some of Brooklyn’s finest and funkiest musicians. The PJT’s as they are playfully known, are an act not to be missed nor ignored. I first encountered this group back in 2004 at the now legendary Black Betty, formerly located at 366 Metropolitan ave. in the neighborhood know to the nation and the world as Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The same neighborhood know for being the birth place of great bands such as Antibalas, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Dub Trio, T.V on the Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dapkings and now a whole new crop of potential greats, including Chico Mann, Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble, Escort, Yah Supreme, Navegante and at the top of that new list lies the Pimps of Joytime. Since my first encounter I’ve been hooked. I bought a CD that night and have been on their email list ever since. After checking the Pimps many times at Black Betty and with the addition of my good friend Chauncey Yearwood being recruited by Brian J, I began to open shows for the Pimps. From Brooklyn to New Orleans to San Francisco (soon to be my home) to Santa Cruz and most recently Telluride, Colorado I have seen the PJT’s rip it and I believe they are next big thing out of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Their first full length album “High Steppin” released on Wonder Wheel recordings is by far one of my favorite albums of all time. Keep in mind that I’m a lifetime music lover and a DJ with quite a large and eclectic collection of music. As the legendary “DJ Smash” said when speaking of the Pimps “Listening to them is like listening to the best radio station ever, with all of your favorite kinds of music on it” The way the Pimps weave through genres, reminds me of the way us DJ’s spin records. Seamless energy, good vibes and bouncy rhythms that move you in mind, body and spirit. The Pimps give you a healthy dose of sweet grooves and infectious harmonies along side a fat beat and funky bass line that brings you to a sort of musical bliss. The PJT’s are in full force these day, constantly touring and creating new fans wherever they go all while elevating to new musical heights, the Pimps of Joytime are charged and ready to lay it down for you.

I hope you’ll join us at Brooklyn Bowl this Friday September 25th 2009 to celebrate life, friends and music. Opening set by yours truly DJ Concerned followed by two knockout sets from the Pimps of Joytime and DJ Nickodemus. Oh, and by the way. It’s free.
